Well, there's two things that are important to understand when somebody's anxious about coming in in dental fear. One is, is it because of a bad experience that you had personally? Or is it just in general, you've heard all these comedy acts that sort of put down dentistry and basically instill in a person's mind fear of dentistry?
I think the underlying thing with it is mostly people are afraid of what's unknown to them. So our way or handling or managing that is multiple factored. First of all, we try to do a initial photo shoot examination, smile exam, so that they can get comfortable with us. So we get to know who you are and you get to know who we are. By doing that, by having that little bit more of a comfort zone to being with. And then we have other things, like (inaudible) a lot of patients find very, very helpful to relax them. It doesn't put them to sleep. We have on occasion, you have some pre-medication for patients that are really, really having a severe thing.
I think the biggest that we've, history wise, shown is that our ability to be compassionate with the patients. My previous horrible experiences as a child is what drove me to dentistry. Was because I know how terrible an experience I had, and what can I possibly do to change that for other people. So that's been my whole goal, is how to comfort people and not have them fearful. That's why I say I think I've analyzed it quite a lot over the years. And I said I think there's the two basic factors is, is it fear of your true self personal experience? Or is it a fear that people are just putting into your mind? Either one of those, you have to respond with almost the same thing of caring, comfort, understanding, looking before we leap, all of the things that we provide in our practice.
