Okay, well, filling of teeth used to be making a hole in them, taking out decay and packing in a piece of metal, which was mercury. It was amalgam was the term, which is taking a piece of metal that you soften with mercury in it. Packing it in your tooth, waiting until it hardens, a minute or two, which is basically the mercury evaporating. Then carving it. Don't eat on it for three hours.
The big drawback of amalgam is when you have it eight or ten years ago, and it's expanding and contracting all that time. It ends up cracking and breaking the tooth. If it's a filling, you'll end up having to have a crown. I know many of you out there have had that experience where you go in and say, 'Oh, chewing on something, my filling fell out.' One of the dentist's first things he says is 'Oh, my goodness. There's nothing left. The tooth's broken. All the enamel's broken off, and you've got to have a crown.'
This again goes back to an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We have a lot of patients that'll come in, and literally have us remove all of their mercury amalgams. They put tooth colored restorations. That's important is the technique in how you do it. It's not just something that everybody does in dentistry, but it's something that's very important, especially if you've had, which a lot of us had, amalgam restorations as a child or as young person.
Again, that's why we pride ourselves on being able to restore teeth to the most life-ike, safe material that is available in dentistry.
